What is the Role of An Amazon Area Manager?

Area Managers are responsible for upholding the high standards of the Amazon brand.

An Area Manager at Amazon is responsible for:

  1. Leading the Amazon Warehouse associates team (a team that oversees the operation that occurs at the Amazon Fulfilment Center)
  2. Realizing customer’s orders on the Amazon website
  3. Selecting to deliver the orders of the customer

As an Area Manager at Amazon, you will not only need to be self-motivated but you will also need to know how to inspire and organize your team. You will also need to ensure that your team performs at the highest possible level whilst attending all of their allocated shifts.

Any candidate deemed to have the leadership traits needed to become a manager will also need to pass the Amazon assessment tests. The HR at Amazon will then use the applicants’ test results to help them decide who is the right fit for the job position of Area Manager.

Amazon’s Hiring Process for Area Manager and Operations Manager Job Positions

Amazon announces their open job positions on their website, on the Amazon jobs search page. You will need to choose a job position that fits your educational background and aptitudes.

Online Application

When you apply for any job at Amazon, you will need to start by creating a profile on the Amazon website. For the Area Manager’s post, you should look for positions under the category of Fulfillment and Operation Management. If your application is accepted, you will need to then complete the Amazon Assessment.

Amazon Assessment

You must pass the online assessment test in order to progress to the interview stage of the recruitment process. Let’s take a look at the two tests that make up this Amazon Assessment:

The Amazon Virtual Job Tryout

The Amazon Virtual Job Tryout test includes five sections. You will be presented with: typical work scenarios and you will need to respond appropriately; tasks that you will need to prioritize; managerial jobs; questions about your background and work experience; and a personality test. Amazon’s recruiters will evaluate your responses and see how effectively you dealt with each of these assignments. You will need a pen, paper, and a calculator to complete this test.

The Amazon Work Style Assessment

You will be presented with statements and will need to say how strongly you agree or how strongly you disagree with a particular statement. Amazon’s recruiters will assess your answers to determine how well they believe you will fit in with Amazon’s work culture.

Interview

Once you successfully complete your assessment test, you will be invited to take part in a face-to-face interview. Due to Covid, however, these discussions now take place online on Amazon chime (an online software). You will need to participate in two interviews with managers from Amazon. Each interview will run for approximately 45.

Job Offer

Once your application has been approved and you have passed all the Amazon assessments and interviews successfully, you will get an acceptance email from Amazon. You will also receive an invitation to a New Hire Orientation.

The Amazon Assessments – In Detail

The Amazon Area Manager or Operations Manager Assessment is made up of two parts: the Amazon Virtual Job Tryout and Amazon Work Style Assessment. Let’s take a more detailed look at the content of each of these exams.

The Amazon Virtual Job Tryout

The Manager in Operations Virtual Job Tryout test needs to be completed in about 45-minutes.

The Amazon Virtual Job Tryout test features the following five key areas:

  • Situational Job Scenarios – Candidates are required to rank their answers according to a scale going from “most likely” through to “least likely”.
  • Daily Management – Applicants are required to list activities and tasks according to their degree of importance and necessity.
  • Running an Area – Candidates are given reports that feature data. They need to respond to questions that refer to these reports.
  • Background and Experience – Candidates need to write a couple of paragraphs or so about their work experience and personal background.
  • Personality Assessment – Candidates need to show what type of personality they possess by selecting a statement that most closely describes them.

The Amazon Work Style Assessment

Amazon’s Work Style Assessments are based on Amazon’s specific Leadership Principles. In the Work Style Assessments, you will be asked to decide, to what extent, a particular statement reflects your style of work. For example, you may be presented with the statements “I enjoy it when things are well structured”, or “I like it when I have the chance to learn new skills”, and you will need to say which of the two statements you relate to the most.

What’s the Amazon Interview Process for Manager Roles?

n the Amazon Operations Manager interview, you will need to use Amazon’s Leadership Principles to support your answers to these styles of questions. When answering these questions, you will also need to give examples of past experiences.

You will be interviewed by several interviewers – each of who will have their own particular approach. You will be asked behavioral-based questions.

4 Amazon Operations Manager Behavioral Question Examples:

  1. Tell me about the different skills and attributes you possess that will make you a successful manager at Amazon?
  2. Tell us about a time when you were presented with a difficult problem that had several possible solutions. What did the problem involve, and how did you decide on the path you chose? What consequences did you experience as a result of this decision?
  3. Describe a situation when you demonstrated one of the leadership principle qualities in your previous work setting? Was this successful or not? Please explain why.
  4. How would you deal with a challenging or difficult team member? As a manager what steps would you take to ensure that the team member became a productive member of the team?

Amazon’s interviewers are looking for answers that follow the STAR approach (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Research this approach and follow it carefully when practicing your interview answers.

The Amazon 14 Leadership Principles (Values) – In Brief

Amazon’s particular culture is founded on a set of 14 Leadership Principles. These principles are behind all the decisions that are made at Amazon and form the foundation of all their projects.

The ideal Amazon employee also possesses these Leadership Principles. So, you will be judged against these principles during your process of recruitment.

Amazon’s Leadership Principles are:

  • Customer Obsession
  • Ownership
  • Invent and Simplify
  • Are Right, A Lot
  • Learn and Be Curious
  • Hire and Develop the Best
  • Insist on the Highest Standards
  • Think Big
  • Bias for Action
  • Frugality
  • Earn Trust
  • Dive Deep
  • Have Backbone, Disagree, and Commit
  • Deliver Results

While many of these principles are clear, some of them are more involved. For instance, a bias for nature, according to Amazon, indicates that it’s better to undertake calculated risks than to be too cautious when it comes to making decisions.

You will need to demonstrate that you possess these principles throughout the application process. Make sure you research each principle well and understand what it means, before you complete your Amazon assessment tests, or take part in an Amazon interview.
