The Construction and Skilled Trade Occupations Test (CAST) is a battery of aptitude tests created to help with the selection of candidates over various skilled trades and construction occupations. It is maintained by the EEI or Edison Electric Institute, however, each company using this exam administers it for their own purposes.

CAST is a comprehensive battery of paper-and-pencil tests which are designed as predictors of a candidates’ likelihood of success in the following skilled trade and construction jobs:

1. Graphic Arithmetic
This test assesses a candidate’s capacity to solve arithmetic problems, based on the information presented in prints or drawings. It features two drawings, each drawing is followed by a series of questions. The exam consists of 16 questions and has a 30-minute time limit.

2. Mechanical Concepts
This test assesses a candidate’s ability to comprehend mechanical principles. It consists of 44 multiple-choice questions. Each question contains a pictorial representation of a mechanical situation, a question, and three answer choices. The test must be completed within 20-minutes.

3. Reading for Comprehension
This test assesses a candidate’s ability to read and understand written reading passages. The test is made up of four passages, each of which is followed by a series of multiple-choice questions, relating to the written passage. There are 32 questions and there is a 30-minute time limit.

4. Mathematical Usage
This test assesses a candidate’s ability to work with basic mathematical problems, in relation to the information given at the start of the test. It contains 18 multiple-choice questions and needs to be completed within 7 minutes.
